Trump labels army attacks on ISIS in Nigeria as "Christmas present"

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said on Friday that recent military strikes targeting ISIS (Daesh) positions in Nigeria amounted to what he called a "Christmas present" for the militant group, according to reports.

Speaking during a radio appearance, Trump claimed that "Tens of thousands of Christians" are being killed in Nigeria and said he had previously cautioned Nigerian authorities about potential repercussions.

Recalling his instructions, he stated, "I said yesterday, 'Hit them on Christmas Day. It will be a Christmas present,"

Trump added that US forces carried out intense attacks against ISIS targets in several areas, describing the group as "terrible" and "butchers."

Emphasizing the scale of the operation, he said, "They really got hit hard yesterday," and added, "They got a very bad Christmas present."

In a separate interview, Trump explained that the strike had initially been scheduled for Wednesday but was deliberately delayed until Christmas Day to give it what he described as "symbolic" significance.

He further said, "They didn’t think that was coming ... Every camp got decimated,"

The US military carried out the strikes against ISIS positions in northwestern Nigeria on Thursday, a move Trump later announced on his social media platform.

US Africa Command stated that the operation was conducted "at the request of Nigerian authorities" in Sokoto State and resulted in "killing multiple ISIS terrorists," according to an official statement.

Nigerian authorities confirmed early Friday that cooperation with the United States on security issues remains ongoing as part of efforts to confront persistent threats from terrorism and violent extremism.
